I have never been more disgusted with congress than now!
I have watched senate and house proceedings the last two days and it is obvious that Washington lives in another reality than the American people. We spend our days working and planning, raising children, dealing with realities of life while senators and congressman take the floor from both sides and spend half their floor time patting each other on the back for the glorious work they have done bringing this bill or that action to the floor and the remainder of their time saying few relevant things about their bill and omitting key points that common sense from the average citizen would immediately reject. Congress lives in their bubble casting votes for special interests and hiding from the voice of the people. These same officials hope to gain re-election so they can better enjoy the addicting power they have achieved. Current opinion of congress is now at 11%. Such a devastating low opinion, one would think, would sway actions and force officials to finally do something to move our country. Instead, we are now at New Year’s Eve listening to President Obama giving a speech, lightheartedly saying we are near reaching an agreement. How can any in Washington not hold their head in shame? Senator Corker (R), standing on the Senate floor, dejected, condemning the president’s words and talking about the sequester, no mention of the fact that congress created the sequester because they could not compromise in the first place. Senator Mikulski (D), now arising stating a real fact that we the Americans who built this country are sick and tired of the constant bickering we have had to put up with. She rambles on explaining the term sequester, and how damaging the “across the board” cuts will be to our economy, she also fails to tell us that the incompetence of both parties has put us here. Instead, she explains how the cuts will affect the military, but mostly how these cuts will devastate entitlements like law enforcement, federal agents, and border security. FDA....on and on, never once apologizing for her and others actions that have brought us to this current mess. Now our once hero, Senator McCain (R) is speaking, getting his digs in to the president, never missing his chance to remind us all that he lost his election. Vigorously pursuing his vendetta, he talks of the right way to do things instead of his past years of slowing and blocking progress and putting his desires ahead of his constituents. No mention or apology of his refusal to use his vast political power to fix his broken party or lead others to a better path. Anger from Senator McCain pails in comparison to the anger of us, the American people.
Colloquy between Senator McCain and Senator Graham (R), attempts to justify not raising taxes on the wealthy. Using “canned” words, Senator Lindsey, describes how they may lose this battle but, will ensure republicans will be in full force to continue the war for the upcoming debt ceiling, vowing to hold us, the American people hostage once again. Blatantly using the word bi-partisanship...a word thrown about on the hill that has little or no meaning to those who utter it.
What we have been waiting on...Now, the big guy, Senator McConnell takes the floor and makes sure that all the blame is put on the president and the democrats. Yes, the same senator who filibuster’d his own bill in front of all watching on CSPAN and the world. He announces that though an agreement to fix this mess could not be reached, he had come through for the American people with the aid of the Vice President to a piece meal approach where parts will be voted on. We have been saved! No mention of his active role ensuring little business had been conducted by the senate in the last four years. We jump to the House of Representatives now on the first day of the new year where they are aggressively pursuing discussions on business of preventing a raise for the House of Representatives. As usual, there is no mention that his bill would not just stay the current raise for himself and others in the house but includes extending the already in place freeze on all federal workers. Wonder why the house was not included in the original bill that put the freeze in place two years ago?
Returning to my beginning statement, I have never been more disgusted with our elected officials than now. It matters little which party swings the hammer; when the gavel falls, you can be assured of one thing, the working man or woman who made this country great will get little good from the swing. Hope dwindles with the coming of the new year after watching debacles from both sides.
Little satisfaction can be had from end of year shows except perhaps a smirk or smile, that for once both the house and senate actually put in a little over-time this past year.
